Put your hands up if you are a card snob! *raises right hand gingerly in the air*
Put your hands up if your way is the right way *raises right hand again*
Put your hands up if you realise this is ego *URGH hand firmly in the air’
So, thats me, I am a Kipper snob, a Lenormand snob, a Tarot snob and a Gypsy Card snob
I started this blog because Card Snobbery is alive and well, it began today with a comment on my Youtube Channel that referred to “old school cartomancy”, in a passive way stating that the way in which I deal my cards is incorrect … cue ego … Hugh Irving always teaches me that “Pedestals are there to fall off of” and that we should not be so embroiled in our egos that we trip over them.
But …. I did answer that comment - no I am not proud that I did - I should have ignored it and moved on, but I didn’t and that is life, I am not taking it down because it is my honest answer - I do not agree.
I realised that Card Snobbery is actually misleading, our beliefs that we have the best system, know how that system is read or simply ignore the system is our own decision.
So getting back to the roots of this issue. Card Snobbery.
Where and when we learn our chosen system “colours” our thoughts and belief system, just because I learned Kipper with traditional Bavarian readers (who trace that back to the 19th Century … see even here my ego jumps in) doesn’t mean that my teachings are the be all and end all of Kipper - it is one way (albeit the traditional way hahahaha see what I did there!!?) and other readers will read it differently depending on where they learned their techniques… it all stems from the teacher …
And this is where it gets interesting, you may have heard of “French School of Reading” or “German School of Lenormand reading” or “European School of Reading” - WOW are there schools!!!??? NO the answer is NO No No No No NO! Germany is big, there is a WHOLE history of Germany changing shape, could every “German reader” be in the German “SCHOOL” of card reading? NO NO NO NO NO! Sorry but you get the point, there are indeed NO “SCHOOLS” that can be applied to a whole nation, there are teachers who have taught their beliefs to a large populace BUT it is THEIR teachings or THEIR book that has influenced so many people to read in that manner. If you have been taught that certain card reading “schools” exist here in Europe please consider the following:
Björn Meuris “There are no schools, just teachers”
I read Lenormand using Game of Hope Techniques, I read Kipper using the Traditional Bavarian Techniques (see I did it again) and I would highly recommend everybody takes time to dissect where their chosen system came from, what are its roots and what traditional techniques belong to the system AND most importantly learn from many many teachers, do not isolate yourself with one train of learning, learn many techniques and find which ones work the best (my inner snob is saying “you know it will be the traditional ones”) but also realise what you are learning is coloured by who you learn it from, it is also coloured by who your teacher learned it from and so on into infinity.
Some reasons I am proud (and a little snobbish) are ........
Will I ever throw my systems to the side for a non-system deck NO way Jose - but I do keep my comments to myself (usually) - if you see somebody doing their best with the information they have, then give them a helping hand, comment something constructive but if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all - in this world of social media and everyone's ego being online for all to see, be the person that sits back and say inwardly … I don’t agree, but thats OK, I do not need to comment negatively. “May you be well and happy” is an awesome help, always wishing the best for that person (even if you are hoping deep inside someone will comment your point of view and “put them right”).
I believe my snobbery comes from spending so much time learning a system, even though I have been “at this” for over a trillion years (yes I am that old) I still spend time “testing” my systems and making sure I know every nuance …. See, its not snobbery really. It's knowledge. I have a BA (Hons) French with German and I don’t have an issue sharing it - why should I worry about what others think of my card reading knowledge?
A final comment, In Germany we have the word “Augenkrebs”, it actually is an awful word meaning “Eye cancer”, but here it is applied to things we cannot “unsee” for example those moments when you see an awful interpretation online and say “my eyes are bleeding” and you feel you may hit your head against the nearest wall to get the idea out of your head… only me?? No seriously, we all have a button that is pressed… for me it's butchering a card system, for you it may be something different BUT if it bothers you THAT MUCH just remove the post from your newsfeed with the “I don’t want to see this” option, unfollow that person OR leave the group!! I have left lots of groups because the readings are just not “my cup of tea” and thats fine - they are not my cup of tea because they are aimed at a different audience, just like This Is You is not my cup of tea but Stranger Things is - This is You is not aimed at me - I therefore choose if I want to watch it or not - I may even be judged for saying it's not my cup of tea BUT you wouldn’t be mean to me because of it would you?
See… live and let live — as long as the cards are continuing their popularity it doesn’t matter!
Long live the cards!!
